Caffeine and Sleep Deprivation Pros and Cons for Tired...
The intent of caffeine and sleep deprivation is to help the students through pressure and stress of studying from courses that they are taking. However, in actuality, caffeine and sleep deprivation effectively enlarge the gap between proper sleep and restfulness needed for body to function efficiently. However, the effects of caffeine on elevated cognitive processes are well researched even though it is â€Å"useful for restoring basic alertness and vigilance†(Huck 489). Although, caffeine seems to provide an equal opportunity for students to excel in their studies regardless of the lack of sleep that they are receiving, there is evidence that suggests caffeine may have a distinct advantage over needed sleep. Furthermore, the paper will†¦show more content†¦Nevertheless, caffeine, also known as â€Å"recreational caffeine†(Kluger), is commonly used to counter-attack sleep deprivation for people, especially for students, who need caffeine to have their studyin g done. However, with no proper sleep and restfulness, the body can become over-worked and can build up pressure where medical issues can occur, such as effects on blood pressure and tension. Over the years, caffeine is routinely used to minimize lack of performance and alertness which is â€Å"impairing effects of both total and partial sleep deprivation†(Sun 91). Evidence suggests that the loss of sleep is induced by deficits in alertness and vigilance that can be minimized by stimulants such as caffeine. It is known that caffeine â€Å"improve[s] reaction times and lapses that are induced by sleep deprivation†(Gottselig 37). In neurophysiologic and functional studies show that frontal regions of the brain are for the most part responsive to homeostatic, the stability, of sleep pressure (32). Therefore, sleep deprivation causes impairments in the prefrontal cortical function (32), where this part of the brain’s basic activity is to be made up of thoughts and actions. Thus, without the proper hours of sleep, students are not able to function and think on a high level and recover from the impairments that were caused from sleep deprivation and from caffeine intake. John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood
John Lloyd Stephens and his traveling companion Frederick Catherwood are probably the most famous couple of Mayan explorers. Their popularity is linked to their best-selling book Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatà ¡n, first published in 1841. Incidents of Travel is a series of anecdotal tales about their travel in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras visiting the ruins of many ancient Maya sites. The combination of vivid descriptions by Stephens and the â€Å"romanticized†drawings of Catherwood made the ancient Maya known to a wide audience. Stephens and Catherwood: First Meetings John Lloyd Stephens was an American writer, diplomat, and explorer. Trained in law, in 1834 he went to Europe and visited Egypt and the Near East. At his return, he wrote a series of books about his travels in the Levant. In 1836 Stephens was in London and here he met his future traveling companion Frederick Catherwood, an English artist and architect. Together they planned to travel in Central America and visit the ancient ruins of this region. Stephens was an expert entrepreneur, not a risky adventurer, and he carefully planned the trip following the then-available reports of ruined cities of Mesoamerica written by Alexander von Humbolt, by the Spanish officer Juan Galindo about the cities of Copan and Palenque, and by Captain Antonio del Rio’s report published in London in 1822 with the illustrations by Frederick Waldeck. In 1839 Stephens was appointed by the U.S. president, Martin Van Buren, as ambassador to Central America. He and Catherwood reached Belize (then British Honduras) in October of the same year and for almost a year they traveled across the country, alternating the diplomatic mission of Stephens with their exploring interest. Stephens and Catherwood at Copn Once landed in British Honduras, they visited Copà ¡n and spent there few weeks mapping the site, and making drawings. There is a long-standing myth that the ruins of Copà ¡n were purchased by the two travelers for 50 dollars. However, they actually only bought the right to draw and map its buildings and carved stones. Catherwoods illustrations of Copan’s site core and carved stones are impressive, even if â€Å"embellished†by a romantic taste. These drawings were made with the aid of a camera lucida, an instrument that reproduced the image of the object on a sheet of paper so that an outline could then be traced. At Palenque Stephens and Catherwood moved then to Mexico, anxious to reach Palenque. While in Guatemala they visited the site of Quiriguà ¡, and before wending their way towards Palenque, they passed by Toninà ¡ in the Chiapas highlands. They arrived at Palenque in May of 1840. At Palenque the two explorers stayed for almost a month, choosing the Palace as their camp base. They measured, mapped and drew many buildings of the ancient city; one especially accurate drawing was their recording of the Temple of the Inscriptions and the Cross Group. While there, Catherwood contracted malaria and in June they left for the Yucatan peninsula. See the Walking Tour of Palenque Stephens and Catherwood in Yucatan While in New York, Stephens made the acquaintance of a rich Mexican landowner, Simon Peon, who had extensive holdings in Yucatan. Among these was the Hacienda Uxmal, a huge farm, on whose lands laid the ruins of the Maya city of Uxmal. The first day, Stephens went to visit the ruins by himself, because Catherwood was still sick, but the following days the artist accompanied the explorer and made some wonderful illustrations of the site buildings and of its elegant Puuc architecture, especially the House of the Nuns, (also called the Nunnery Quadrangle), the House of the Dwarf (or Pyramid of the Magician), and the House of the Governor. Last Travels in Yucatan Because of Catherwood’s health problems, the team decided to return from Central America and arrived in New York on July 31st, 1840, almost ten months after their departure. At home, they had been preceded by their popularity, since most of Stephens travel notes and letters had been published in a magazine. Stephens had also tried to purchase the monuments of many Maya sites with the dream of having them dismantled and shipped to New York where he was planning on opening a Museum of Central America. In 1841, they organized a second expedition to Yucatan, which took place between 1841 and 1842. This last expedition led to the publication of a further book in 1843, Incidents of Travel in Yucatan. They are reported to have visited a total of more than 40 Maya ruins. Stephens died of Malaria in 1852, while he was working on the Panama railroad, whereas Catherwood died in 1855 when the steamship he was riding in sank. Legacy of Stephens and Catherwood Stephens and Catherwood introduced the ancient Maya to the Western popular imagination, as other explorers and archaeologists had done for the Greeks, Romans and ancient Egypt. Their books and illustrations provide accurate depictions of many Maya sites and a lot of information about the contemporary situation in Central America. They were also among the first to discredit the idea that these ancient cities were built by the Egyptians, the people of Atlantis or the lost Tribe of Israel. However, they didn’t believe that the ancestors of the native Mayans could have built these cities, but that they must have been built by some ancient population now disappeared. Essay Censorship - 2029 Words
English 111 October 27, 2013 Censorship Have you ever been listening to the radio and heard a â€Å"beeeeep†in some parts of the song you’re listening to? You know, the annoying sound that interrupts the song? The sound is a familiar one among those of us that listen to the radio, in particular Rap/hip-hop music stations. This noise is heard because it’s used to bleep out/censor the word that was previously there; the word was most likely ‘bad’ or offensive. Censorship is a growing concern for our society, whether it’s because of the lack of censorship or too much. To understand censorship, it’s important that you know exactly what it is. According to an article by Jonathan Alter, â€Å"Let’s Stop Crying Wolf on Censorship†he believes that†¦show more content†¦One rapper who had his lyrics taken in the wrong context was Sir-Mix-A-Lot. Believe it or not, some people didnt like when I used the word mayonnaise. And I didnt use it in a bad context, insists the rapper. Its not the tappers whose minds are in the gutters. To equate mayonnaise with sperm, thats kind of sad. (Benesch 42) Some artists feel that being forced to change their words is an obstruction of freedom of speech. Yes, there are FCC regulations that need to be followed but that doesn’t make them moral. A lot of controversy exists in rap because of the things that are expressed in rap songs and even videos. But deep down rap isn’t all about degrading women, shooting people, or doing drugs. Most and I stress most, rappers rap about their struggles and life growing up but not all of them. Some rappers didn’t have a tough life, but most of the â€Å"gangsta rap†raps about real struggles that they and their culture went through. Rap has a history, and to understand why rappers write about the things they do, you have to understand where it came from. Civilian Complaint Review Board Free Essays
Established in its current incarnation in 1993 under the leadership of former New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins, the Civilian Complaint Review Board asserts to be the largest civilian oversight agency of its kind within the United States, and investigates thousands of civilian complaints each year. Even though it has only existed in its current form for a little over a decade, the conception of a board delegated power to investigate complaints about potential police misconduct predates the administration of Robert Wagner, who was responsible for investing the nascent Civilian Complaint Review Board-which was then comprised solely of three deputy police commissioners-with new powers in 1955. We will write a custom essay sample on Civilian Complaint Review Board or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, it remained a province of the NYPD, with all investigations being conducted by police officers, and their findings forwarded to the deputy commissioners for recommendation. In 1965, Mayor John Lindsay would ask former federal judge Lawrence E. Walsh to conduct an investigation into the role of the review board. He would recommend that members of the general public, non-police officers, be given substantial authority in any new civilian complaint review board. Subsequently, Lindsay designed a search committee tasked with finding civilians fit to serve on this new review board, which was chaired by former Attorney General Herbert Brownell. After much debate-and opposition to the proposal from the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association-Mayor Lindsay decided to appoint four civilians to the reconstituted board. This prompted opponents of the newly redesigned board to campaign for a city ballot proposal that would have forbidden any direct civilian oversight of uniformed police officers in New York City. The measure was enacted by an overwhelming margin, and the review board once again came under the sole purview of the New York Police Department. In 1986, the New York City Council enacted a piece of legislation that called for imposing some degree of civilian oversight once again, which led to the appointment of six new members by the mayor-with the advice and consent of the City Council-and six by the police commissioner. The Civilian Complaints Investigative Bureau then began to hire civilians to investigate complaints lodged against the NYPD, but did so with the oversight of police department investigators and employees. The incident that galvanized some members of the political body politic and certain segments of the public behind the movement for an all-civilian supervisory board occurred on August 6, 1988, where individuals protesting a curfew imposed over Tompkins Square Park were forcibly removed from the premises. The Civilian Complaint Review Board commissioned an investigation into this incident, and published a report that was extremely critical of NYPD conduct during that confrontation. Critics of internal police procedures used the Tompkins Square â€Å"riots†in order to press for an all-civilian review board. In 1993 Mayor Dinkins and the New York City Council created the Civilian Complaint Review Board in its current incarnation and invested it with subpoena authority, and gave it the ability to recommend disciplinary measures in cases where police misconduct were verified and substantiated. Over the years, NYPD officers have come under public scrutiny with allegations of corruption, brutality, excessive use of force, and poor firearm discipline. [1] Individual incidents have tended to receive more publicity; a portion of which have been substantiated while others have not. The Knapp Commission in the 1970s, and the Mollen Commission in 1994 have led to reforms within the NYPD aimed to improve police accountability. However in recent years, likely due to low salaries and declining morale, many more off-duty NYPD officers are being arrested and charged in and outside the city for crimes ranging from drunk driving to homicide. [2] One of the department’s most spectacular cases of corruption was that of Lt. Charles Becker, who holds the dubious distinction of being the only NYPD officer to die in the electric chair. Due to repeated public outcry over these and many other incidents, specifically, the Tompkins Square Riot of the 1988, and the Crown Heights Riot, prompted the creation of the Civilian Complaint Review Board[3] (known commonly by its acronym, the CCRB) in 1993, an independent investigative unit of entirely civilian investigators (with some being former members of the NYPD), who investigate allegations of Force, Discourtesy, Offensive Language and Abuse of Authority made by members of the public against members of the NYPD. Complaints are made directly to the CCRB, through the city’s 311 information system, online at nyc. gov/ccrb, or at any Precinct within the city limits. This was the third iteration (after an attempt by Mayor Lindsay and Mayor Koch before to create â€Å"mixed†review boards), but was the first to employ an all civilian Board and investigative staff. [4] [edit] Today The CCRB exits today as a fully independent civil department, staffed with 100 investigators and about a dozen miscellaneous employees. Additionally, three officers from the NYPD’s Monitoring and Analysis Section of the Department Advocate’s Office work with the CCRB at their office at 40 Rector Street. Their role is to provide the Investigators with access to certain restricted NYPD documentation quickly and efficiently without having to wait the lengthy processing period document requests normally take (sometimes outlasting the course of an investigation). The agency is headed by the 13 board members, who defer day-to-day operational command to an Executive Director (currently Ms. Joan Thompson, as of September 18, 2007, formally Ms. Florence Finkle, Esq. , who is then followed by the First Deputy Executive Director, which was formerly known as the Assistant Deputy Executive Director before that position was transformed into its new form (this later position remains unfilled). The Agency then separates into several divisions, the largest being the Investigative division led by a Deputy Executive Direc tor of Investigations, followed by four Assistant Deputy Executive Directors of Investigations. However, due to budget cuts in 2009, the Deputy Executive Director of Investigations and three of the Assistant Deputy Executive Directors of Investigations were eliminated, leaving the Investigations division under direction of the First Deputy Executive Director and one Assistant Deputy Executive Director of Investigations. [5] The division is then broken down into 8 Investigative Teams, led by an Investigative Manager, along with a Supervising Investigator and an Assistant Supervising Investigator. Initially, there had been 7 Investigative Team Managers, with two teams sharing one manager, but in early 2010, budget cuts have forced the agency to restructure under 6 Investigative Managers. Promotions to Assistant Supervising Investigator and Supervising Investigator are not necessarily granted to Investigators based on tenure or rate or result of investigations. [5] The remaining Investigators fall into Level I and Level II, which simply denotes tenure, experience and pay grade. The agency is also broken down into an Administrative Division, which includes Human Resources, Information Management Unit and the Case Management Unit (which stores all records of past cases), amongst others, which is led by the Deputy Executive Director of Administration. 5] There are then four other directorships, the Research and Strategic Initiatives Director, Mediation Unit Director, Director of Intergovernmental and Legal Affairs, and the Press Secretary. However, 2009 budget cuts have also caused the Press Secretary and Outreach Unit to be eliminated. There is also an attorney, Mr. Grahram Daw, Esq. , who serves as the Agency’s legal counsel. These units compliment and serve the Investigations Unit, which acts as the main focal point of the Agency. [5] How to cite Civilian Complaint Review Board, Papers
A Summary of My Life Essay Example For Students
A Summary of My Life Essay My name is Oanh Tran Shields and I was born on July 25th, 1990. I lived in Vung Tau city, which has a beautiful beach in the south of Viet Nam. Im the oldest sister of four, with one younger sister and two younger brothers. In Viet Nam, for some reason, many of the people I know, such as friends and neighbors, used to call me Princess . That nickname followed me from when I was a little girl until the day that I flew to America. People called me that, but I know that Im not a princess at all. There are quite a few things that people dont know about me. For the most part, people think Im dependent on others, but Id say Im more independent than most people think. I was born into a family which takes care of their children very much. My parents brought me to school every morning and brought me home in the afternoon every single day from the day I started going to school until I graduated high school. In contrast, most of my friends learned how to get to school by themselves around eighth grade, and nearly all of my friends drove to school by themselves or with other friends when we were in high school. I wasnt driving to school because my parents did not allow me to drive to and from school. Since the streets near the school had lots of trucks passing by. In high school, while my classmates were hanging out with each other, I had to stay at home after school. Whenever I had an invitation to a birthday party from my friends, my parents would bring me to the party and pick me up when the party was over. Everybody thought that I was a girl who was very reliant on my parents. However, I listen to my parents not because Im weak or dependent, but just because I appreciate what they have done for me. I follow what they ask of me to make them feel more secure instead of rejecting them. Their caring didnt hold me back as I knew how to prepare my meals, my clothes, and my future. When I went to Ho Chi Minh City, where is far from my hometown (about 73 kilometers), for studies, I lived in a dormitory with new friends. I knew how to take care of myself and how to avoid getting sick. I caught the bus to come home every month by myself and went to extra classes every day. More importantly, If I was a dependent girl, I wouldnt know how to finish my documents to come to America without anyone as a sponsor, which is one of the most complicated things for young people at my age when they want to come to any overseas country. Im an ambitious girl, who has various hobbies. Sometimes, I dont know what I should focus on because Im interested in many different things in the world. First, I wanted to be a photographer, because I love taking pictures. When I got older, around 15 years old or so, I wanted to become a singer. I was enjoying singing and touching on different kind of music a lot. Moreover, I also liked doing something that concentrated on art, such as drawing, designing, or making handmade cards. Furthermore, I love working on cosmetics and different things to do with it, as I take pleasure in doing peoples hair and make-up. In the end, I realize that these favorite things which I enjoy doing are my hobbies, and not so much my career. Studying towards and doing business is my career, since I understood clearly about what my strongest field is and what I am fascinated with. I realize that Im friendly to everybody, but Im little bit picky in choosing my friends, especially close friends. .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 , .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 .postImageUrl , .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 , .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918:hover , .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918:visited , .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918:active { border:0!important; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918:active , .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918 .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ude61ed33043652294f8c131de3885918:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: It is a man's world. It is man who battles in wars EssayI like making new friends, but Im not interested in chatting around for a few hours like many girls my age love to do. Its rare to find me standing in one group with a few girls who are gossiping about people. I dont like being talkative. For me, time is very important and I dont want to waste it on chatting or gossip. However, I enjoy shopping and chatting with friends when I have actually finished my work. If not, I will feel guilty about myself. I would like to be close to a friend with who cares about their future and being mature. One more thing that people rarely know about me is I am a strict person sometimes. Even though I am a young girl, my mind requires more than what a young girl wants. I can be easy and be a young girl when I deal with something that is trivial or unimportant. However, dealing with something that is serious and significant, you will see me like an old girl; I am not fun and easy-going anymore. My biggest goal is becoming a successful woman, so I can help as many as needy people as I can. Every time I give someone something, I feel so happy and joyful. My heart hurts whenever I see people going hungry, being frosty and being sick without food, clothes and medicine. Orphanage kids can make me cry easily without hitting me. At that moment, I wish I could have a lot of money to build a house for those kids, buy their clothes, and give them an education. I hope I can do it one day in the near future. Now you know that I am an independent girl, not a princess, as someone said. Not only I am independent, but also I am ambitious. Sometimes I am easy-going, sometimes I am strict. Being easy to cry is not for the type of girl, who seems strong, self-reliant and strict, but that is how I am. Those features make me a complicated girl.

Taxation Practical Introduction Australian -Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Taxation Practical Introduction Australian? Answer: Introducation Brownlee (2016) defines a fringe benefits as an additional materialistic privilege which an employee receives along with his basic form of compensation such as his wages or salary. The Fringe Benefit Tax Assessment Act 1986 is the primary legislation which governs the provisions related to tax implications of fringe benefits in Australia. One of the primary requirements in relation to the existence of a fringe benefit is that it must move from the employer to the employee in an employment relationship. Where the requirement is addressed the benefit would be eligible to be taxed under FBTAA provisions. When an employee is provided a car by the employer which is additional to his wages or salary in from of a fringe benefit it is regarded as a car fringe benefit under FBTAA Section 7. It is stated by the legislation that when an employee uses the car which is owned by the employee totally or is on lease for private purpose, such usage would be considered under Car Fringe Benefit Tax. In the same way the usage of the car would be considered under Car Fringe Benefit Tax in case the car is provided to the employee for private use even where the employee does not put the car up for such use. The determination of car fringe benefits taxable value is done through the application of preexisting methods. There are mainly two methods provided under the FBTAA which are applied for this purpose. They are the Statutory Formula Method and the Operating Cost Method. The process of applying such methods for value determination is provided expressly through the provisions of FBTAA (Statutory Formula Method s 9 and Operation Cost Method s 10A and 10B). Under the provisions of section 9 the actual cost of the car is required to evaluate the tax value and in relation to section 10A and 10B the operational cost is required. In addition when it comes to the operating cost methods the extent to which the car has been used in a public and private manner has to be differentiated and on the other hand no such distinction is required in the application of the statutory formula method. Another difference between the applications of both the methods is that the Statutory methods requires additi onal documents to be applied appropriately. The present situation (Case facts) The issue in relation to the situation is that a car has been provided by Shiny Homes Pty Ltd (Employer) to Charlie (employee) in addition to his wage and salary. As per the definition of Car fringe benefit it would be treated as a fringe benefit under FBTAA provisions. The application of section 7 on the situation would provide an evident result that the car has to be subjected to fringe benefits tax. The issue in relation to determining the Taxable fringe benefit value can be resolved by the application of the two methods. Under both the methods the statutory rate which would be applied is 20%. This rate has to be multiplied with the cars base value to determine the taxable value of fringe benefit. As discussed above personal and private use of the car has to be differentiated in relation to the calculation under the operating cost method and not under the statutory formula methods. This has been done in the following computation Statutory method Operating Cost Method: In relation to the provisions of section 11 (1) the deemed depreciation is computed by applying the statutory rate of 25%. In relation to the provisions of section 11 (2) the deemed interest is computed by applying the statutory rate of 5.65% for the year 2016/17. As evident from the above computation the method which provides a lower value of taxable fringe benefits is the Statutory method. Thus this method is to be preferred over operational cost method to derive the taxable value. In the present situation it has been given to use that the employer had rented the car for letting the employee use it for the purpose of his wedding. The employer also provided the honeymoon cost incurred by Charlie. These benefits have to be taxed under the FBTAA. Provisions for parking fringe benefits are set out by section 39A of the FBTAA which arise only when the parking of the car is done on a place owned or hired by the employer. However the parking in this case have been separate thus it cannot be taxed. In the situation stated by the case study it has been provided that both Allan and Betty have made a decision that they want to change tree. They have also taken a decision to sell off their house which is located in Melbourne and with its proceeds purchase a country house which is located in Victoria. Therefore as this transaction would not be considered under tax implications. Allan and Betty earn a living working as a locum doctor and a part time accountant respectively. Therefore under the provisions of section 6-5 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 the income of Allan and Betty would be subjected to income tax implications. In addition to these facts the case study also states that Allan as a result of his popularity within his professional field gets food and cakes in form of a token of appreciation within the clients. Although the fees which Allan charges is subjected to the provisions of ITAA the cakes and food would not be liable to be taxed as the commercial value of the se products is only $35. Allan has also been gifted with a wine bottle which is valued at $360, thus it is going to be included towards assessable income tax provisions of the ITAA. Indications are provided though Taxation Ruling TR 97/11 which helps to differentiate activities between hobbies and business activities. These indications are as follows The intention of the parties is one of the primary differentiating factor between a business activity and a hobby. Where the intent is commercial it depicts business activity and where the intent is non-commercial it depict a hobby. Business activities are primarily carried out to make profit and hobbies are carried out for personal satisfaction Business is constituted when the people associated with it have some form of commercial relationship such as an employment relationship whereas in a hobby the relationship is personal. A hobby generally include a low level of investment and on the other hand high investment is required in relation to a business activity A business activity has to have a registered place on the other hand a hobby can be carried out without a place. The case of Cooper Books Pty Ltd vs. Commissioner of Taxation of Commonwealth of Australia ruled that the profit generated from a hobby is to be treated as an income of the person. The marmalade made by Betty has become famous among the neighbors. Therefore she made a decision of opening a stall and selling the product every next Sunday. It had been stated by the principles provided in the case of Martin v. FC of T (1953) that no lone activities is capable of providing exclusive evidences and contains place on top indicators. However in the situation of Allan and Betty the nature of the activity is recurring. Thus their activities would be subjected to tax consequences. As provided by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) a barter system transaction is to be subjected to tax under GST and ITAA rules. This can be stated as this system of business is considered same as business under cash or credit transaction. According to the provisions of Subsection 25 (1) of the ITAA the revenue generated from this business is eligible to have tax implications. According to the provisions of F.C. of T. v. Cooke Sherden 1980 profit gained form the barter system implemented by Allan and Betty is liable for GST as per GSTR 1999 and ITAA. This is evident as the income which has been generated through Barter system is to be treated same as credit and cash transaction.
